Update Google Chrome

To make sure you're protected by the latest security updates, Google Chrome can automatically update when a new version of the browser is available on your computer, Android device, iPhone, or iPad. With these updates you might sometimes notice that your browser looks different.

Get a Chrome update when available

Chrome should automatically update on your computer, and based upon your Android Play Store or iOS App Store settings. Learn how to check if updates are available and how to update Chrome.

Computer

Normally updates happen in the background when you close and reopen your computer's browser. But if you haven't closed your browser in a while you might see the Chrome menu in the top right change colors:

• Update Chrome A green menu means an update's been available for 2 days.
• update An orange menu means an update's been available for 4 days.
• Red menu A red menu means an update's been available for 7 days.
• To update Google Chrome:
• In the top right, click the Chrome menu Chrome menu.
• Click Update Google Chrome. If you don't see this button, you're on the latest version.
• Click Relaunch.

The browser saves your opened tabs and windows and reopens them automatically when it restarts. If you'd prefer not to restart right away, click Not now. The next time you restart your browser, the update will be applied.

Android device

Chrome should automatically update based upon your Android Play Store settings. You can check if there's a new version available:

• Touch the Play Store icon Play Store logo > My apps & games.
• Apps with available updates are listed under "Updates."
• If you see Chrome Chrome logo in this list, touch it to install the update.iPhone or iPad device
• Chrome should automatically update based upon your iOS App Store settings. You can check if there's a new version available:
• Open the App Store.
• Touch Updates.
• If you see Chrome Chrome logo in the list, touch Update to install.
• If asked, enter your Apple ID password. The updates will download and install.

• Check for an update and see the current browser version on your computer
• Open Google Chrome on your computer.
• In the top right, click the Chrome menu Chrome menu .
• Click Help > About Google Chrome.
• The current version number is the series of numbers beneath the "Google Chrome" heading. Chrome will check for updates when you're on this page.
• Click Relaunch to apply any available update.

More information for Mac, Linux, and Windows 8 users

Mac users: You can also set up automatic browser updates for all users of your computer if Google Chrome is installed in your Applications folder. Go to "About Google Chrome" and look for the Set Up Automatic Updates for All Users button.

Linux users: Use your package manager to update Google Chrome.

Windows 8: Close all Chrome windows and tabs on the desktop, then relaunch Chrome to apply the update.
